Sample size: the number of sample locations within the field. Samples consist of 1 sq. ft. by 6 inches deep soil samples taken using a shovel and sampling iron. For each soil sample, sift through a series of screen meshes, and sort and count all insects to species and stages. Identify and count all cutworm larvae. For this sequential sampling calculator, total up all larvae from all the samples, and keep track of the # of samples taken. In addition compare the average cutworm density (the total # larvae sampled divided by the # of samples taken) to the action threshold. If you are close to the threshold density, then more samples may be required to improve precision of the density estimate.
