Sample size: the number of sample locations within the field. Samples consist of 1 sq. ft. by 6 inches deep soil samples taken using a shovel and sampling iron. For each soil sample, sift through a series of screen meshes, and sort and count all insects to species and stages. Identify and count all root weevil adults, pupae and larvae. To get the average density, divide the total number of weevils by the number of samples taken. In general, the more samples taken, the better the estimate of the average density.
