Degree-day models depend upon the assumption that the rate of development (y axis) is a linear function of temperature (x axis). At the extremes, this assumption is no longer true in most cases, but the resulting errors from using degree-days tends to be small in relation to other sources of variation, such as microhabitat and genetic differences.
