QUESTION: How do I install IPMP 2.0 for Windows on my Windows 95 (or Windows NT)
computer? The instructions in the User's Manual don't seem to work right.
ANSWER: In general, IPMP 2.0 will work fine under Win95 and WinNT, but certain steps in the
installation differ from procedures needed for Windows 3.1.
- In the User manual under 3. INSTALLATION, follow the steps for making an IPMP2
directory on your hard disk, and copying the files to that directory. You do not need to exit
Windows to do this, just open a DOS window (such as with START (the START button at
the lower left hand corner of the Windows 95 screen), PROGRAMS, MS-DOS PROMPT).
- Also, extract the files by typing extract at the DOS prompt (step 3. under INSTALLATION).
- You may then run IPMP2 in several ways. One method will be described here. Most persons
experienced with WIN95 will figure out how to run IPMP on their own. These instructions
are to clarify the procedure for new and occasional users of WIN95. Remember that
IPMP2.HLP is a WINDOWS HELP file, so WIN95 treats it as a document rather than as a
program.
- You can create a SHORTCUT to this IPMP2.HLP file from your desktop. Write down (or
remember) the full path and directory for IPMP, such as
c:\IPMP2\IPMP2.HLP
- Find some empty space on your desktop. You may need to click the ICONS in the upper right
most corner of whatever applications you have active in order to DROP, REDUCE WINDOW
SIZE, OR CLOSE the applications.
- Once you have some empty desktop space, move the mouse cursor over to it and click your
right mouse button. You should see a pop-up menu. Click on the NEW menu item, then on
SHORTCUT. There, type in the full command line and file name for IPMP, for example,
c:\IPMP2\IPMP2.HLP
- As an alternative, you may BROWSE to that directory and click on the file, but you must first
change the FILES OF TYPE box (near the bottom of the window) to ALL FILES in order to
see it. Also, there are several hundred files in that directory so remember that they are listed in
alphabetical order. Once you have selected it, click on OPEN.
- Once the path and file name are correctly entered in the box for Command line:, you may click
NEXT, and then FINISH, and a new icon will be displayed on your desktop. You may then
run IPMP by double clicking on that icon just like with any other item on the desktop.
- This creates an icon on the desktop that you double click to run. If you want to use the IPMP
icon, you can right-button click the icon once, click the menu item PROPERTIES, click the tab
for SHORTCUT, click the button for CHANGE ICON, then BROWSE to the IPMP2
directory, and select the IPMP2 icon displayed in the box. That completes the installation.
- Also, you can avoid going through the above procedures by double clicking on IPMP2.HLP
from Windows EXPLORER or from MY COMPUTER once you have opened the IPMP2
directory.
- Note that you should not create a shortcut for IPMP2 by dragging the IPMP2.HLP file to the
desktop, that will actually move the file out of its proper directory to the desktop (which is
actually located at c:\Windows\Desktop).
