Drosophila suzukii can be monitored as flies are moving into susceptible host crops, out in non-crop vegetation, or in the ripening fruit as the season progresses. No highly selective baits have been found that capture only SWD; other closely related, non-harmful species are captured generally by the same traps and lures. For this reason trapping remains somewhat difficult for persons without some training or who do not have the time to learn the documents available at this and other websites. Also, traps are often not very efficient, such as when a preferred fruit host is just ripening and thus flies are more attracted to fruit than baits. However, traps can be extremely helpful in indicating local SWD pressure and risk to the crop.
